Thank you for your interest in the Laney College Design Club. After much consideration, the preliminary meeting timeframe will be Wednesdays from 1:00PM to 2:00PM, with the first meeting taking place on September 9th.

If you find this timeframe to be incompatible, please reply to laneycollegedesignclub@gmail.com. Although we have decided on an approximate time, we would like to know your opinion.

Chris & Nadine are driving. We have a total amount of 12 seats including Chris & Nadine for rides to CAS (so 10 other people). These people have said YES to going. We are also meeting Alaska's colleague who will be accompanying us throughout the museum. He was involved with the design of the living roof of the place.

ARRIVE at CAS by 10 AM. They open at 9:30 AM and since it is a Friday they might be packed but let's hope for the best!

We called CAS today and were told that RSVPs for groups had to be made at least 30 days in advance for any sometime discount, but there are other ways to get the price reduced from $24.99:
- Having a VALID student ID with a picture (to prove it's yours) will allow $5 dollars off making the price $19.99 for students.
- If you take public transportation to CAS (i.e. MUNI) then $3 is taken off admission price.
- If you are a Triple A (AAA) member then $3 is taken off admission price for you and up to 3 more people.
** SO if you have your student ID and either take MUNI or are a Triple A member admission price will be reduced down to $16.99.

If you are interested in carpooling to san francisco on Friday, show up to the meeting on Thursday so we can try and arrange drivers and passengers. If you can Drive let us know ASAP with the amount of passengers your car can hold (including yourself). Drivers will be taken care of for bridge toll and whatever we have left to help take care of gas.

"Rising Tides" Competition - AIA San Francisco

The San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission, also known as the BCDC, is holding a competition in conjunction with the San Francisco chapter of the American Institute of Architects. The competition seeks ideas, both pragmatic and ambitious, in regards to combating the issues relating to sea level rise caused by global warming. As sea ice and glaciers contribute to rising sea levels, how shall we go about protecting the ecosystem of the San Francisco Bay and cities that exist along its shore?

The competition is open to everyone and costs $45 dollars to register before May 15. There is no limit to how many entries can be submitted, but there is the matter of paying the registration fee separately for each entry.

The price of registration after May 15 is $75 dollars per entry.

Spring Break is Here!

Yay for vacations! But we did have a meeting yesterday =)

Co-Vice president Chris Baas gave an informative speech about a college he has applied to, CCA (California College of the Arts). For those who do not know CCA, it is a private art school based in Oakland and San Francisco. The architecture department is based on the San Francisco Campus. He spoke to us about the different requirements that CCA wants students to complete before transferring and about the portfolio requirements as well. Have a favorite school that has a great architecture department? If anyone would like to speak about a certain school that interests them please let us know. It's always good to give information to others, especially since we are all in the same boat about either transferring or trying to figure out what schools are best for you to apply to.

* The first meeting after the break, THURSDAY APRIL 23rd 2009, we are going to have a meeting, but we are also going to have a club activity going on at the same time. It's going to be fun and informative so you don't want to miss it!

** REMINDER: We, as a club, are visiting beautiful San Francisco FRIDAY APRIL 24 2009. We will be going to CAS (California Academy of Science) possibly along with other significant buildings so if you are still interested, we're trying to make this a day trip to enjoy and spend some quality time.

Thanks to those who came to the meeting. Sorry we did not have that much information to tell you all but the main thing is that Everyone should know about the Academy of Science field trip we have planned. If you read the previous blog posted by Alaska then you can see why we are postponing it until the 24th. It's not because we are not getting enough people it is because we have the chance to have someone who is coming with us to talk about the place, esp the living roof, YAY! SO FRIDAY APRIL 24TH is the date. PLEASE get back to us ASAP if you are going to go! so far we have

California Academy of Sciences Tour/Visit

Hey everyone,
Last meeting I said I would talk with Brent Bucknum about coming with us to the CAS. I was able to talk to him. He worked with one of the firms commissioned to work with Renzo Piano. He was part of the design of the green roof. I asked him if he would give us a tour of the building and he was excited to do it.
He would not however be able to make it April 10th. If we would like to go instead on April 24th, he would gladly come with.
Brent is working with Nik Burtulis, up at Merritt Community College, on a class called Regenerative Design. His class starts April 25th and he would like to invite the students signed up to attend also, which could be pretty awesome!
This will give us more people and more time to figure out a discount. Brent said he would be able to help with setting up the tour with the academy. He is also going to talk with the maintenance manager and might possibly be able to set up a tour of the roof, on the roof, not just on the viewing deck. Anyways, we shall have to see what happens.
In the next few days I'll be in correspondence to figure out more details such as discount rate and if we actually can go out onto the roof.
Brent works mostly with green roofs, green plumbing, and landscape arch, so I am going to talk to Ron about making it on the 24th. It would be nice if we also had someone with more architectural background with us as well!
Okay does anyone have any objections to going on April 24?
Any suggestions for other activities we could organize?
Does anyone know if we need to get legal forms so that Laney is not held responsible for our field trips?
I would like to get a list of people who are interested and a list of people that are definate. so respond with that info asap please! Ill keep you all updated...

Bake Sale

Aloha everyone! Sorry for the lag in the post. It's because there isn't much to say from last week. We only had about 5 people at the most show up to the meeting where Anthony spoke about other ways to gain more funding. Ways that included trying to be sponsored by various businesses. And in return we would definitely advertise their company on our club t-shirts. If anyone has suggestions or know companies that are willing to sponsor feel free to let us know.

THIS COMING WEEK we are going to continue the bake sale! Monday, Tuesday & Thursday since Wednesday there is no school(so please don't show up!). We do need baked goodies from club members so please feel free to bake what you want. If you do bake, bring what you have to Ron and ask if you can place everything in his office until someone comes to sell. The selling will take place in the same area of the building. We know that there is one tray of brownies ready to be sold and there are some cookies, so please bring more everyone! If you are able to sell either pass an email through to us or just show up ready to smile and hastle people into buying =)

Oh Yes, APRIL 1 is the deadline to get forms in for Design Village before the fees go up. If you are really serious about this competition and have read everything about it in their website you are strongly encouraged to contact others to have a group and get going. The competition is from April 17 - 19. The last weeked of spring break.

All right everyone! This coming week we are going to host our first Design Club Bake Sale! We need all the help we can get whether it is baking or selling. Please, Please, Please really consider this members! The profit we are able to make will go towards future events we will try to be attending, for example, we would like to go to the California Academy of Sciences and if we make enough money we will be able to pay for a portion of everyone's ticket that would like to go. If you are able to participate in anyway for this bake sale please contact Anthony, Chris or Nadine right away. If you can donate some of your time to help sell out in the quad please email your schedule to LCdesignclub@gmail.com right away. Remember, we need all the help we can get! **Tell all your friends about the bake sale !!!!!

New Points System

Design Club is going to be managing a points system for its members. Meaning, that each time a member does something like say, attend a meeting, they get a point towards their name. Another example would be for this coming up bake sale we are going to have, all those who decide to bake and/or sell for it will be receiving points. Why care so much about points? Because the points system will help you out when we have certain activities and events we want to do and attend. Say if we would like to go somewhere like Southern California for spring break but some of out members need help financially with some of the rates that are not going to be covered by the school, then depending on how many points they've earned, they will be helped out a little bit more than others who don't have as many points. The points system is a way to encourage you all to be more involved with Design Club because now you get perks! It's like a credit card and getting rewards everytime you use it.

UC BERKELEY LECTURES

That's right, lectures! But not boring ones. Alaska, who is currently taking a design class at UC Berkeley has informed us about different lectures that have been going on at UCB's Architecture Department. They are usually on Wednesdays and are about various topics. This coming Wednesday, March 18th, the lecture is going to be about Sustainability in Indonesia. It runs from 7PM - 8PM at UCB's Wurster Hall which is also the Architecture building. Admission is Free and open to anyone! We will be posting future lectures as well now so check back periodically.

DESIGN VILLAGE

We still are serious about this competition and have about 4 people that have said they are willing to compete (Chris B, Alaska L, Eric L, and Toni B). If you would still like to participate please contact anyone of the officers asap so we can try to make this happen and get everything in by the deadline.

OffGrid 2.0 Ideas Compeition

From the California Architectural Foundation. This is an open ideas competition to further the general public's understanding about the synergistic relationship between the built and natural environment in California. The CAF challenges architects, students, designers, planners, and all interested individuals to develop solutions to reduce the environmental impacts on our planet, slow urban sprawl, and discover innovative ways to effectively reuse existing resources. This year the focus is on reclaiming the Horshoe Cove site at Fort Baker in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. Hello, Hello, Hello Everyone! So here are the minutes from today's meeting! Thank you for everyone who showed up today! We had more than ten people which is awesome. Let's hope our meetings continue to grow in hope that our Design Club will make it big!

Field Trip Announcement!

Who: All Design Club members and their friends! Anyone is invited. The more the merrier especially since the rate we have to pay to get in depends on the amount of people we get to come. We need at least 15 people in order to try and get an even more discounted rate than 20 dollars! If you would still like to come please contact Anthony Brown at AbtBrown@gmail.com, he has the sign up list.

Although Friday's are probably going to be popular and crowded, if we go at a good time we should be all right with the amount of people we have to encounter. And most students don't have school on Friday so we can take our sweet time :)

Anthony has filled us in that he had turned in the proposal for the Southern California trip this coming spring break. We will know if we get the funding hopefully by next week. For all of those who do not know anything about this, we are trying to have the school allow and fund us on a trip to Southern California to explore what the other region of California has to offer like architectural programs at universities, notable buildings, museums, firms, etc...
We are working on ways to promote our club with fliers around campus, but those still need to be approved!

Competition Update!

Design Village at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo Please visit Http://designvillage.calpoly.edu for all the information on this competition! Due date for registration is due before April 1. Anything turned in after will be penalized for the fee. SO please please please if you are interested to check out the website and get back to Anthony Brown to add you to the list of those who want to compete! Depending on how many people are willing and determined to join this competition we might possibly have two groups go!
Remember that this is an awesome experience and competing at least once in your lifetime is such a great accomplishment! AND not to mention a competition like this looks good on resumes! ;)

2009 Open Architecture Challenge! I just read on our facebook group from Nate B. That there is a design competition that partners up students and designers, some professionals too to design a classroom for the future. I know that everyone has had some type of bad experience in their elementary, middle, high, or college classroom! If you join this competition, you will be able to make sure kids of the future won't have to go through those horrid experiences too! Design the ultimate classroom that is cost effecient and will help the kids better than ever! Here is the link with all the information!

Fundraising Options

A good portion of today's meeting revolved around the fact that we want to try and be independent as a club when it comes obtaining money! Although the school will fund us for certain activities, we should prove to them that we are able to have our own sources of income as well (it will probably give us brownie points, yeah!). The more we get involved with fundraising the more the activities we want to do will cost less. Here are some of the Ideas we came up with today
Raffle. A raffle for the club is most likely going to happen. Everyone in the club should go out this weekend and next week to any type of business whether it is a bakeshop, sports store, restaurant, any where and try to get donations! The more donations we get the more we can take 100% profit on it all. For those of you who are trying to go out and get those donations remember to put a smile on no matter what and dress the part. Look cute, talk as sweet as you can, and don't forget to remind them 'it's for a good cause'
Food Sale / Bake Sale. Who doesn't love baked goods? So for this it is trying to be determined what day or days are good to go. We have to wait for Anthony to get the green light from the administration to sell out in the quad. Ideas are welcome for the types of finger food we can try to offer and baked goods we should do! If you are interested please contact Anthony so he can put you down on the list! Once we know the days and times, we will make sure everyone is contacted in hope that they can pick up a shift to work!

Lastly, Everyone received an email from Nadine's email address last night (angela_arteche@yahoo.com), but we've made a new and official Laney Design Club email address that is going to be used. As this meeting takes place during a lunch period for most students, you are welcome to bring your lunch to the meeting as long as you keep your area clean. Weekly meeting times have changed! Meetings will now take place from 1:00PM to 2:00PM on Wednesdays and Thursdays. It is only necessary to attend ONE of two meetings each week.

As this meeting takes place during a lunch period for most students, you are welcome to bring your lunch to the meeting as long as you keep your area clean.
